The NHL Is Relaxing Their Dress Code, And Here Are 18 Looks From 2021 That Prove That's The Right Move

Here's how they really redefined being icy.

Hockey players often show flair and style on the ice. Off the ice though, the style we see from players is often much more muted compared to their fashion counterparts in football and basketball. Thankfully, that trend is slowly starting to change.

"Maybe on the road I'll loosen it a little bit... I'll just wear the suit at home." 😅 Jason Spezza weighed in on the relaxed dress code seen around the NHL.

As the younger generation of players become household names in the NHL, and the dress code begins to relax— we're seeing spicier and fresher looks all the time. So, I've taken it upon myself to compile the best looks NHL players served us in the year 2021. Do I know anything about fashion? You tell me.

1. David Pastrnak time travelling in style.

The Bruins squad came to play on and off the ice this past winter, showing up in vintage ski gear. The sunnies in warm-ups are a great touch. Save some room folks, this won't be your last helping of Pasta on this list.

2. And who could forget dear rat boy?

Brad Marchand may be a dirt ball on the ice but off the ice he cleans himself up.

3. William Nylander's preseason drip.

William Nylander must be protected at all costs. Here we see him on his Gerard-Way to beat the Habs in a preseason match-up. I'd say he's the saviour of this broken, beaten, and damned Leafs fan.

4. P.K. Subban stayed warm while looking ice cold.

Subban never disappoints when it comes to fashion and flair. More like Pea Koat Subban, am I right?

5. Ducks looking fly together.

Trevor Zegras showed us the future of hockey with his insane assist earlier this year. His team, however, may be a bit behind the times with their rollout of ugly Christmas sweaters. To me, it doesn't count if the sweater was mass-produced to be ugly. The vintage Mighty Ducks logo is so classic though I had to include it in the list.

6. David Pastrnak living the mint chip fantasy.

7. Patrik Laine's '80s movie villain realness.

From the shades to the stache to the turtleneck to the devilish smirk, Laine is looking like he's about to detonate a nuclear warhead... in my pants.

8. Auston Matthews' front cover fit.

The kids love their bucket hats and Matthews is no exception. He and Nylander bring fashion to Toronto like their names are Jeanne Beker.

9. Josh Morrissey honoured his dad in purple.

Morrissey's father sadly passed away from cancer. To honour his dad he had this jacket custom made and signed by all Jets players, where it was then auctioned off for Hockey Fights Cancer. Dripping for a good cause.

10. Saroya Tinker kickin' it.

I know this list is supposed to be NHL players but I had to include these awesome shoes from the Premier Hockey Federation's Saroya Tinker. The great defender for the Toronto Six always brings the pre-game looks, recently partnering with OVO.

11. Pastrnak looks like fine china.

David Pastrnak would be a lovely wedding present in this suit. Do NOT put him in the dishwasher though.

12. San Jose Sharks just kept swimming.

The lads got themselves matching tracksuits. Erik Karlsson looks like he has a bunch of knockoff watches in his trunk he is trying to unload.

13. P.K.'s Happy Gilmore Collection.

The Devils lack of playoff appearances has given Subban plenty of time to work on his golf game. He partnered up with Shooter McGavin himself for these looks on the links. This is probably the closest we will ever come to seeing him in a Bruins sweater.

14. Loui Eriksson keeping it 100 for his 1000th game.

Instagram: @nhlxfits

Eriksson may have slowed down on the ice but he is looking better than ever off it with this classic look.

15. Victor Hedman and Yanni Gourde as two of Mumford's Sons.

16. Mikhail Sergachev's sweater is better.

Instagram: @sergach98

Unlike his Tampa Bay teammates listed above, Sergachev goes for the more dressed-down look. Those Russian winters seemed to have taught him how to keep warm and stay hot.

17. Jacob Chycrun in noted fashion editorial: So Scottsdale! Magazine.

Instagram: @jakobchychrun

Did you know Scottsdale, Arizona has it's own magazine? And did you know Arizona Coyotes defenceman Jacob Chycrun had his own feature in it? He does look like a reformed high school bully but somehow I am living for it.

18. Anton Stralman does Dad Rock.

Twitter: @ArizonaCoyotes

This is my favourite look on the list only because the Coyotes veteran on the bottom left looks like the arena's lighting guy who got lost on his way up to the booth.

The NHL still has a long way to go in letting their freak flag fly but, in my opinion, the looks on this list are a great start. Did I miss your favourite fashion statement from this year? Let me know in the comments!
